Xavier University Plans a New Medical School

Xavier University of Louisiana plans to create a medical school and a postgraduate school of health sciences. Xavier’s medical school would join Tulane University Medical school, LSU Health (in New Orleans and Shreveport), and Edward Via School of Osteopathic Medicine as the state’s fifth medical school (which will graduate its first class in 2024).

The strategic planning will take a minimum of three years, according to Xavier’s president, Reynold Verret, and the school’s administration have been discussing the notion for more than five years.

Xavier’s pre-med program is well-known across the nation for delivering more Black students to medical universities than practically any other college, but the medical sector as a whole has seen only minor diversity advances.

A medical school, according to Verret, would enable Xavier to make a much bigger mark in the profession with Black students, as well as address the nation’s rising physician shortage.
